Purpose of the job
Oxitec is a pioneer in controlling insects that spread disease and damage crops. Through world class science it is tackling the major global challenges of keeping people healthy and increasing food production and it is doing so in a way that is sustainable, environmentally friendly and cost effective.
We are seeking a highly motivated and capable laboratory technician to be part of a UK team dedicated to the research and development of our self-limiting technology in insect species that transmit disease. This position involves the technical support of our insect teams from preparing diets to looking after insect colonies.
The successful candidate will join a dynamic project team developing transgenic insects, including Anopheles mosquitoes to control a major malaria vector, as part of a project funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
The successful candidate will have a self-starting attitude, show strong organisational skills, and demonstrate original thinking and attention to detail. Team-orientation and flexibility in duties are essential. Experience working in a biological sciences laboratory, and insect rearing experience are desirable. The successful candidate will be able to work independently while maintaining a strong team ethos, demonstrate good laboratory practices and the ability to follow SOPs, have good communication skills and an enthusiasm for the goals of Oxitec.
The responsibilities of the role are to include:
Maintaining colonies of insect strains for use in R&D experiments and as part of business continuity
Providing laboratory support to the department: o Maintaining stock solutions, supplies and equipment; o Stock-taking and ordering
Providing support to ongoing experiments in R&D
Providing support to the mosquito R&D General Laboratory Assistant
Provide occasional weekend support as part of a rota within the R&D team
Key Skills and Qualifications
Educated to A-level or demonstrating technical abilities appropriate for the role
Experience working in a biological sciences laboratory is desired
Experience working in an insect rearing laboratory is a bonus
Must be diligent and organised, with data recording abilities
Have an attention to detail
Able to work independently and within a team
Good written English and oral communication skills and a diligent attitude
Experience working in a biological sciences laboratory is desirable, with insect rearing expertise preferred
Industrial laboratory experience (1-3 years) is also preferred
Adaptability and flexibility
Demonstrates individual industry and team playing
Strong and willing communicator
Attention to detail
