Great phone apps to improve your work-life balance

At Milton Park, we believe in a good balance between work and life. Having the chance to be able to unwind your mind and body is imperative to your health and wellbeing.

There’s no reason why you can’t make a difference to your life through little changes. Small or large, ensure you stick to these changes to give yourself a true work-life balance.

Not having the ability to control these aspects of your life can lead to negative responses from your mind and body, such as stress or burnout.

However, an optimal work-life balance can be achieved with the help of the little devices we all keep in our pockets!

Many of us use our phones for activities that can contribute to stress and burnout – distressing headlines on news apps, inflammatory arguments and endless timelines of smug holiday photos on social media and even distressing notifications regarding bills and taxes.

However, our phones can also be used for the power of good.

Here are six apps which can help you tackle the work-life balance.

 

Apps For The Mind

Lumosity – brain Training

If you often find yourself lost in colourful and repetitive games, this may be a good alternative for you – Luminosity is a ‘brain training’ app which uses logic and pattern games to engage and wake up our brains.

You will have a daily ‘workout’ for your brain that challenges and strengthens a range of cognitive abilities.

The games are designed beautifully and become more challenging the more you play – you will soon see the difference not only within the app, but how your brain handles a whole range of tasks – combating stress has never been so much fun.

 

Google Arts & Culture

In an increasingly driven world, we can often forget to stop and appreciate what is beautiful. The Google Arts & Culture app lets you tour some of the greatest art galleries and museums in the world from anywhere. Read the stories behind beautiful paintings, and remember it’s not all about work.

You can even curate your own art collection within the app, so you can easily find your favourite works of art wherever you are.

Exhibits are available from over 1,200 museums, galleries and institutions from 70 countries, so whatever your taste, you are bound to find art that you love – and learn more about the art which inspires you.

 

Apps For The Body

7 Minute Workout

Exercise can often be an afterthought when it comes to achieving the perfect work-life balance. It can often feel like work, but ironically it is one of the best ways to avoid stress, burnout, improve productivity and achieve a good work-life balance.

If you simply can’t find the time, this app makes squeezing in a bit of effective exercise in a very short time frame.

7 minute workout presents you with a huge range of workouts which can easily be performed at home with minimal equipment for a range of abilities.

Tackle full body, bums, abs, legs and arms with short daily bursts of activity, and build up from easy (15 jumping jacks, 10 step-ups, 5 push-ups and a 20 second plank) to more challenging exercises.

The app is free and is a great way to build up your fitness and reserve a little slice of time, just for you.

 

Couch to 5k

Another way to grow your fitness slowly and confidently is to start a couch to 5K programme.

Recommended by the NHS, Couch to 5K is designed for anyone who wants to start running – and can be tackled at any ability level, both running outside or on a treadmill.

Couch to 5K transforms anyone into a 5K runner in 8 weeks through a programme revolving around bursts of jogging mixed with walking/rest periods. As the weeks go by, you find yourself running more and resting less, as your 30 second jogs turn into one minute…. Five minute…. Eight minute…. Until finally you are comfortably handling a 25 minute 5k jog.

The programme should be done three times a week (with plenty of rest days between) and each session lasts around half an hour – a small dedication for a huge achievement!

The couch to 5K app tracks your progress, gives you instructions as you run and can be synced with your workout playlists on your music apps, to make your journey as easy as possible.

 

Apps For The Soul

Headspace

Headspace labels itself as a ‘gym membership for your mind’, guiding you though short meditations and mindfulness exercises which can calm your brain and increase your happiness.

The free version of the app is a great introduction to the practice of meditation, and is perfect for those who have never tried. The guided sessions are short and friendly, ideal for a time-out to help recollect your thoughts and avoid burnout.

 

Space – Phone/Life Balance

Many of us love our phones, but we can also have an unhealthy relationship with them.

Space is an app which helps you control your app usage. Do you have a habit of spending your lunchtime scrolling through Facebook? Space is a free app which (non-judgementally) provides you with zenful moments on your phone before you open an app.

The science here is that the chemical dopamine hit opening an app gives your brain (which can prove addicted) is controlled and slowed, meaning you will find yourself mindlessly checking apps less and less.
