The Global Goals – get involved!

Published on: 03/06/2019

As World Environment Day approaches on Wednesday, we asked Environmentalist and Mingle alumni Penny Walker for her top tips on how we can all aspire towards sustainability as individuals and businesses...

Have the schools strikes, David Attenborough or Extinction Rebellion woken you up to climate change? Are you cross about plastic pollution, litter and waste? Do you think women should able to achieve what men achieve? Do you worry about bees? Do you wish the economy worked in the interests of everyone?

Pretty much any issue that is grabbing attention in the ‘sustainability’ world is there in the 17 Global Goals, or UN Sustainable Development Goals [link: https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/ as they are also known.

So you’ve seen there’s a problem – where will you help to put things right?

When we got together for a Mingle at Milton Park, and learnt more about the Global Goals, people asked themselves where they can have a big impact on a particular goal: at home, at work, or as part of the community at Milton Park?

Two of the issues which grabbed people’s enthusiasm were waste and gender equality. These are some ideas to get you thinking.

Waste

  • At home: maximise reuse through mending, reusable cups, charity and second-hand; recycle; compost.
  • At work: redesign products to be resource-efficient; use less paper, use recycled paper, recycle office waste paper.
  • As part of Milton Park: pool ideas about recycling and reuse; understand what recycling systems are in place on the park, and make sure staff and contract cleaners know how to use them.

Gender equality

  • At home: help children realise that they can play with any toy, join in with any sport and wear the clothes they like regardless of gender; talk positively about opportunities for girls and women which are outside of traditional roles; stand up against sexism.
  • At work: notice if it’s always the women who make the tea and take notes in meetings, and the men who speak up. Measure pay and the gender balance at different levels of the organisation. Proactively encourage a more even gender balance.
  • As part of Milton Park: provide mentoring across organisations to help women step up to leadership.

If you’d like to know what other businesses are doing to support the Sustainable Development Goals, take a look at this series of features. http://www.penny-walker.co.uk/blog/2019/3/21/how-can-business-contribute-to-the-sustainable-development-goals and http://www.penny-walker.co.uk/s/SDGs-in-The-Environmentalist-1-7.pdf
