World Environment Day: Encouraging Green Travel at Milton Park

It’s World Environment Day on 5th June 2019, and this year the United Nations is using the occasion to raise awareness of air pollution. With transport emissions being one of the leading causes of air pollution worldwide, we’re proud to offer a range of sustainable travel options that benefit the environment and are helping to make Milton Park a greener, happier place to be.

If you’re looking to go greener with your commute, there are a range of everyday travel solutions, special schemes and facilities, and regular events that you can take advantage of right here at the Park.

Everyday Green Travel Solutions:

Whether it’s on a daily, weekly or less scheduled basis, making one small change to your travel routine can have a big positive effect on sustainability. Here are some of the things you can do to make Milton Park greener (and the ways we try to make sustainable travel a little easier for you):

Travel by bus. Air quality is often poorest in areas where traffic congestion is more common. Riding the bus to work cuts down congestion and reduces the number of separate vehicles producing emissions in the environment.

Milton Park runs a reliable and dedicated Shuttle Bus to and from Didcot Parkway station. To encourage usage, people who work at a Milton Park company can buy a shuttle bus pass for only £20 a year – think of all the money that could save you on petrol!

Car share. If you want to stick to travelling by car, sharing your ride is a great way to save time, save money and reduce your stress levels. Milton Park operates a secure Car Share scheme that’s available to all staff at the Park. This scheme runs through FAXI, the car share platform that connects you to colleagues with a similar commute and routine.

By finding someone to share your daily ride with, you’ll get preferential parking that will allow you to arrive into work quicker – and help clear up congestion on the Park.

Cycle to and from the Park. Cycling is another green option that’s great for your physical fitness as well as the environment. You can take advantage of the many cycle paths around Milton Park, which connect to the surrounding towns of Oxford, Didcot and Abingdon, as well as the villages along the way. A dedicated cycle path that runs through the Park is located on the south side of Park Drive.

Going the Extra Mile for Sustainability:

In recent years, Milton Park has increased its commitment to encouraging green travel to and from the area. Since appointing our dedicated Sustainable Travel advisor, Veronica Reynolds, we’ve been able to develop a range of facilities, schemes and events that make travelling sustainably easier than ever – with great results! Here are some of things that we’ve done to achieve this:

To encourage other forms of transport, we’ve held Car Free Days on the Park. On our car free days, people who travel to and from work via anything other than a single-occupied car earn the chance to win one of several prizes! Likewise, our monthly Bike2Work scheme rewards workers who cycle into the Park on the first Wednesday of the month with a free breakfast from Café Metro.

In fact, we’ve done a fair bit to encouraging cycling as a green transportation method. We run a free bike loan scheme for all occupiers, with stations located across the Park and twenty bikes available for hire. Bike storage is located at most buildings on-site, and cycle maintenance stations are located through the park, so you won’t be left lugging around any punctured tyres for too long!

Also located on the Park are a selection of different charging points for electric cars. Two electric cars can be charged at the same time at each of the points, which are located at Innovation Centre, The Gym, Innovation Drive, and at the Park Centre.

A Runaway Success!

To date, the community here at Milton Park have responded positively to the greener travel initiatives. The most recent Milton Park travel survey showed that the single occupancy vehicle rate has continued to decline year-on-year, dropping from 69 per cent in 2016 to 63 per cent in 2018. The survey also showed a 2.5 per cent increase in cycling as well as a rise in car sharing.

Each of these changes show that greener modes of travel are on the rise here on the Park – which also means that air pollution and congestion are on the decline!

We’re on the path to greener travel – let’s see how much more progress we can make in time for next year’s World Environment Day.
