Professor Zarnecki to speak at Didcot First's 10th anniversary lecture

Published on: 09/03/2020

The guest lecturer at Didcot First's 10th anniversary Café Scientifique will be Professor John Zarnecki speaking about: 'The Cassini/Huygens Mission to Saturn & Titan – The Didcot Connection!'

Professor Zarnecki has a long and distinguished history in astronomy having previously worked on the Hubble Space Telescope, the Giotto probe and Halley’s Comet. He recently served as President for the Royal Astronomical Society 2016-2018.

Professor Zarnecki will be talking about the joint NASA/ESA mission to the Saturnian system which was arguably one of the most ambitious missions of scientific exploration to date.

Launched in 1997 and arriving at Saturn in 2004, it delivered the Huygens Probe to the surface of Titan, Saturn’s largest moon, and spent 13 years studying the Saturnian system.

Looking at the data and results from Titan, one of the most fascinating places in our Solar System, attendees will find out how many people knew that the first part of the Huygens Probe to touch the surface of Titan was built in Didcot!

Sarah Hopgood, co-ordinator for Café Scientifique Didcot said: "We are thrilled that Professor John Zarnecki will give the 10th Anniversary lecture titled ‘The Cassini/Huygens Mission to Saturn & Titan – The Didcot Connection!'

"Didcot First initiated the Café Scientifique talks at the Cornerstone in 2010 and since then there have been over 100 public talks, covering subjects from cancer, 3D printing, racing car design and the opioid crisis. Speakers have ranged in experience from two 14 year old students from the Didcot schools to the Director of the National Physics Laboratory."

The lecture will take place on Tuesday 17th March at Didcot’s Café Scientifique at Cornerstone Arts Centre, 25 Station Road, Didcot OX11 7NE.
