Oxfordshire County Council has confirmed that the A4130 road crossing at Backhill Tunnel railway pass are now on and working.

Backhill Tunnel railway underpass opened in 2017 for cyclists and pedestrians to have a new foot and cycle path beneath the railway to avoid a longer route into Milton Park and instead enter and exit via Park Drive. It also helps those people staying at the nearby Courtyard by Marriott hotel to easily access the park.

Now that the crossing is fully operational, it will ensure the route is connected and accessed safely.

The tunnel has cut cycle and walking journey times for those living in Great Western Park and working on Milton Park by up to seven minutes for cyclists and 12 minutes for people on foot.

New crossing lights now workingVeronica Reynolds, our Sustainable Travel Advisor, is the first to try out the new crossing.

The initiative was funded by the Oxfordshire Local Enterprise Partnership and the project was managed by Oxfordshire County Council.

Philip Campbell, commercial director, Milton Park said: “The new road crossing has connected our business community to Great Western Park and beyond. By making it easier to reach us by bike or foot, it is reducing the number of vehicles on nearby roads, reducing people’s commuting time and helping to encourage economic development in the area.

“This all supports our Vision 2040 to increase access to sustainable modes of transport to the park while reducing single occupancy car journeys. Thank you to the County Council for making these lights operational.”

Veronica Reynolds, sustainable travel advisor, Milton Park added: “Thank you to Milton Park’s Bike Users’ Group their help and support in campaigning to get this crossing open and to the County Council for getting this up and running.”
