HRH The Duke of Gloucester Visits Cobalt Light Systems on Milton Park

Published on: 30/05/2017

Cobalt Light Systems recently welcomed HRH The Duke of Gloucester to its headquarters on Milton Park. During a tour of the company The Duke was introduced to production and R&D staff, and received some hands-on experience with Cobalt’s award-winning Raman spectroscopy products.

The visit comes two years after Cobalt won the prestigious Queen’s Award for Enterprise - International Trade, for dramatic growth in export sales. Since receiving the award Cobalt has continued to exhibit strong growth in both domestic and export markets, with successful products deployed globally in three key sectors:

  • Handheld Detection - Cobalt’s Resolve system enables handheld identification of hazardous materials, including explosives, narcotics and toxic chemicals, through sealed opaque containers. Resolve removes the need for first responders to open containers to take samples for analysis - improving operational safety by keeping hazards contained. The system is deployed in hazmat incident management, military search and EOD, law enforcement, and screening at ports & borders.
  • Airport Security - The Insight Range of liquid explosive detection systems for scanning liquids in unopened containers, typically from passenger hand luggage, is now deployed at over 70 airports across Europe, Asia and Australasia, including eight of the top ten EU hub airports. The product has won numerous accolades, including the prestigious Royal Academy of Engineering’s MacRobert award; the premier award for UK innovation in engineering.
  • Pharmaceutical Analysis – Cobalt’s RapID and TRS100 systems enable cost-savings and safety improvements for raw materials identification and drug quality testing, which are essential requirements in pharmaceutical manufacturing. The instruments are currently used by 21 of the 25 largest global pharmaceutical companies.

Cobalt is headquartered in Oxfordshire and opened offices for sales and customer support in Washington, D.C. in 2015 and in Hong Kong earlier in 2017.
