Meet our new head gardener

Published on: 24/04/2020

With the Park a little quieter than normal and travel having reduced, we have seen an increase in walkers and runners enjoying the Park as Spring continues in earnest with flowers blooming and the trees starting to burst.

While we are dreaming of returning, you may be pleased to know that this hasn't stopped the day-to-day running of the Park's landscaping and grounds.

In fact, we have a new head gardener and wanted to introduce him to you.

Some of you may know that Nurture, the award-winning national horticulture, landscape and grounds maintenance business, looks after the landscaping and grounds.

Meet Jon Hopson who has joined the Milton Park Nurture team as head gardener.

How long have you worked in the industry?

I've worked for Nurture for 12 years.

What was your first job?

My first job at Nurture was pulling weeds from shrub beds and I have been able to expand my career within the company from that point. I have put my hand to all aspects of work from tree surgery to landscaping and general grounds maintenance.

What has been your career highlight?

Four years ago I was Contracts Supervisor on a large-scale maintenance contract that covered four main military barracks across the Salisbury Plain. This was a challenging contract but has now been brought up to an extremely high standard and is one of our flagship areas showcasing what we do on a large scale.

What green initiatives are you passionate about?

We have been putting in place environmental projects on our projects to increase biodiversity including wildflower meadows, bulb planting and specific plants to increase pollinators. I'm hoping that I can make a good impression at Milton Park with more green initiatives.

With COVID-19, how are you working to look after Milton Park?

It's an interesting time at the moment. The first challenge is to keep the team going to a high standard while implementing the social distancing guidelines to protect the guys' safety and any member of the public.

What's next?

I'm extremely excited to work at Milton Park. I have been capturing Spring at the Park with my camera to share with people what's going on, which I know has been shared on the Park's social media.

From stunning hot pink tulips to mown lawns, it really is a great place to work with a brilliant team.

I plan to continue the high standard and bring in new regimes that will hopefully be noticed by people on the Park.

When people start returning, they will see me walking around, so I hope they will come and say hello and introduce themselves - it would be great to meet people.

Welcome Jon from everyone at Milton Park. It's great you're here and we can't wait to return to see your team and your hard work! Thank you to you all.

Lastly, a reminder that the RHS' National Gardening Week is happening from Monday 27th April - Sunday 3rd May 2020. Find out more here: https://www.rhs.org.uk/get-involved/national-gardening-week/
