National Walking Month: what's the data showing at Milton Park

Published on: 01/05/2020

Did you know that May is National Walking Month?

Living Streets, the UK's charity for everyday walking, has its annual campaign which this year is looking at keeping your daily exercise fresh and is urging the public to #Try20, which is encouraging people to walk for 20 minutes every day throughout May to maintain their physical and mental health and wellbeing during lockdown.

With this in mind, the Milton Park team has been looking at the data that we have thanks to our Vivacity Traffic sensors which were installed on the Park in October 2018.

These sensors continue to provide data on traffic, including cycling and pedestrian use of the Park’s roads.

You may be interested to know that due to lockdown, compared to the same period last year, there have been 70% fewer cars, and walking and cycling levels have only reduced by half.

The data shows that walking through Milton Park remains popular, despite, or perhaps because of, the lack of traffic.

Moreover, we see that people are walking throughout the day, not just at the usual lunchtime and morning and evening peak times.

Vivacity sensors Milton ParkVeronica Reynolds, sustainable travel advisor, Milton Park said: "We have a number of key workers who are based at the Park who continue to make their daily journeys in. We thank each and every one for the vital work they are doing to support people during this time.

"Combined with people working at the Park and those from the local community, we have been pleased to see that walkers have been using the Park, not just at lunchtime, but through the day for their daily exercise.

"We are thrilled that people are enjoying the Park as it bursts to life in Spring and the work that Nurture, our landscape company, has been busy doing to keep the Park looking at its best for when people start to return."

Did you know that we have three walking routes around the Park?

They are:

- Red route - 1.5km

- Blue route - 1.8km

- Green route - 5.2km.

To get started, download our walking trail map to find your perfect walking route.

You can also find out lots more about National Walking Month through Living Street's website. From posters to podcasts, there's so much information. Visit: https://www.livingstreets.org.uk/

Lastly, please remember the Government's requirements for social distancing so that people can safely share such spaces together.

Happy walking.
