Oxitec shortlisted for Innovator of the Year award

Published on: 26/02/2014

Oxitec, based at 71 Innovation Drive, is pleased to congratulate Dr Luke Alphey on being shortlisted for the BBSRC’s 2014 Innovator of the Year competition. Shortlisted in the social innovator category, the award recognises Dr Alphey’s world-leading research at Oxitec, in the field of genetic control of insect pests and the potential benefit to society.

The awards were established by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) in 2008. According to the Minister for Universities and Science, David Willetts:

“These awards recognise the impact of bioscience both on the economy and society, through driving innovation, training highly-skilled people, improving businesses and public services and attracting foreign investment.”

Oxitec is a pioneer in controlling insects that spread disease and damage crops. It’s products build upon the use of the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT), an effective, species-specific and environmentally friendly method of controlling harmful and damaging insects.

Oxitec CEO Hadyn Parry said:

“I’m delighted to offer our congratulations to Luke on being shortlisted for this prestigious award. The BBSRC funds some of the world’s leading bioscientists, so for Luke to be chosen is a testament to the world class research he led while at Oxitec.

“For the past 10 years, Luke and Oxitec have been committed to translating that research into new and more effective, sustainable solutions to controlling the dengue mosquito and other insect pests; being shortlisted in the social innovator category is a wonderful endorsement of his scientific creativity and excellence."

BBSRC invests in world-class bioscience research and training on behalf of the UK public. Its aim is to further scientific knowledge, to promote economic growth, wealth, job creation and to improve quality of life in the UK and beyond.
