Proposed works on Sutton Courtenay High Street

Published on: 27/07/2016

Improvement of the local foul water network capacity in Sutton Courtenay has been requested by Thames Water. Over the past 18 months, discussions have been ongoing as to the best way to provide this additional capacity

This improvement work, focussed around a new box culvert storage system in the High Street, is now scheduled to start in Autumn and will mean some disruption for local residents whilst this work is undertaken.

After reviewing a number of options, it was decided by Thames Water that their preferred way forward was for the developers to build one holistic sewer solution that accommodated all their flows, rather than having separate sewer upgrades.

The proposed sewer installation will be in the form of a 1m x 1m concrete box culvert, installed under the High Street at a length of 100 metres. The existing mains sewer would be diverted through the new box culvert, giving the sewer network the additional storage capacity. Properties along the High Street would then be connected to the box culvert and the old sewer would become disused.

At present, discussions are currently underway regarding the management of the construction, including requirements to close part or all of the High Street during elements of the installation.   The works will be undertaken by a contractor on behalf of the developers.
