Shuttle bus: introducing new smart card bus pass system

Published on: 09/07/2015

If you are one of the many people who use Milton Park’s three shuttle buses between Didcot Parkway and the Park, then there is an important upgrade happening in September to the bus pass system which you need to know about.

Due to the success of the Park, the popularity of the Milton Park Shuttle Buses has increased.  Since January this year, a third shuttle bus has been introduced to the Park to operate at peak times, and deliver an extra later evening collection between the Park and Didcot Parkway.

For the last 10 years, a one-off fee has been charged for purchasing a Milton Park shuttle bus pass.  However, we have had feedback that the system is being misused by a small minority of people who either no longer work on the Park or who work or live in the surrounding areas and have obtained a pass in the past or from someone else.

These extra passengers are utilising some of the capacity on the buses and causing excess demand at peak times.

Fair & sustainable service

Our aim is to ensure that all three shuttle bus services continue to be sustainable, efficient and meet the needs of the people for whom they are intended.  Therefore, we realise that the current bus pass system is now no longer fit for purpose and a solution to avoid misuse is being introduced.

New “Oyster” style smartcard

With effect from 7th September 2015, a new “Oyster” style plastic smartcard at a cost of £20 per annum will be launched.  Old passes will cease to be valid from 30th September 2015.

Register online or drop in

The new smartcard system will be operated by Courtney Buses, our bus service operator.  People will be able to register for a new card online from the beginning of August.  Alternatively, we will be hosting a number of information sessions throughout August, where people can visit a Courtney Buses representative at the Innovation Centre to register for new cards.

All new smartcards will be addressed to the individual but posted to the employee’s Milton Park premises to avoid further misuse and to ensure that only genuine workers on the Park receive and use them.  All data gathered throughout the registration process will comply with the Data Protection Act 1998, and will be used only by Courtney Buses to understand and manage the bus usage.

The new annual fee will be used to fund part of the cost of the additional third bus and any remaining revenue will be wholly reinvested into the bus service.

James Dipple, CEO, MEPC Milton Park said:  “This new system is designed to lead to an improvement in the shuttle bus service for our customers and employees.  We hope that people will agree that £20 per annum represents very good value to enable travel to and from Didcot Parkway to the Park as many times as required over a full calendar year.  We want to ensure that the system is fair, properly monitored, sustainable, and only available to people on the Park.”

For visitors to Milton Park who don’t have a pass, the fee will remain at £3 for a return trip and £2 for a single trip.
