Technician

Company: Oxitec

Reporting to: Senior Scientist.

Purpose of the job: 

Oxitec is a pioneer in controlling insects that spread disease and damage crops. Through world class science it is tackling the major global challenges of keeping people healthy and increasing food production and it is doing so in a way that is sustainable, environmentally friendly and cost effective.


This role requires the individual to be highly motivated and capable to provide technical support in our R&D team to meet our project objectives and company goals. This ranges from maintaining a clean working environment to looking after our insect colonies and/or laboratory equipment, as well as helping to maintain a safe and functional working environment.

 

Responsibilities: 

  • Washing up equipment, removal of waste and cleaning of laboratory areas
  • Preparation and maintenance of laboratory stock solutions, supplies and equipment
  • Stock-taking and ordering of laboratory supplies
  • Diet preparation
  • Cleaning and organising work areas
  • Basic insect handling and/or molecular work
  • Following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) or experimental protocols
  • Data collection, recording and entry on to server
  • Excellent lab book maintenance
  • Providing occasional weekend support as part of a rota within the R&D team
  • Training staff as required in line with training records
  • Follow Health & Safety and containment requirements for all activities
  • Have a clear understanding of the commercial impact of the work and responsibilities and strive to optimise performance (including cost of running poorly designed experiments, ways to improve efficiency of processes, areas for cost savings etc)

 

Key Qualifications and Skills:

  • Educated to A-level or demonstrating skills and approached appropriate for the role
  • Must be diligent and organised, with data recording abilities
  • Have an attention to detail
  • Able to work independently and within a team
  • Good written English and oral communication skills and a diligent attitude
  • Competent in MS Word, Excel and Outlook

 

Key Experience: 

  • A track record of working successfully both in a team and individually
  • Insect Technician: Experience of working in a biological sciences laboratory is strongly preferred with insect rearing expertise desirable
