Who they are

Tokamak Energy is a global leader in fusion energy and high temperature superconducting (HTS) technologies. They work with governments and industry to develop and bring fusion and HTS solutions to market through innovation and strategic partnerships. A major part of this is their end-to-end capability in HTS systems, from design to manufacturing.

They are the Magnet Systems Partner for the UK Government’s STEP Fusion programme, under a £70 million contract running to 2029, working with UK Fusion Energy to deliver HTS magnet systems for the STEP prototype power plant, while also contributing to tokamak systems and plasma integration.

Founded in 2009 as a spin-out from the UK Atomic Energy Authority, Tokamak Energy is headquartered in Oxfordshire, with subsidiaries in the United States and Japan. Today, they employ over 300 people and have secured more than £280 million in investment.

They operate through three divisions:

Fusion – Fusion energy technologies, expertise and testbeds for government and private fusion programmes, including ST40, the world’s highest field spherical tokamak.

TE Magnetics – HTS systems for commercial applications including fusion energy, power distribution, life sciences and propulsion.

Ridgway Machines – Manufacturing equipment for the superconducting, electrical and wider energy sectors, enabling the rapid industrialisation of HTS products.

Job Description

This is a hands-on, varied Electrical Technician role supporting a wide range of engineering, lab and infrastructure activities in a dynamic technical environment.

You’ll work across multiple projects rather than a single production line, contributing to everything from control systems and power distribution to fault finding and installations. The role requires someone adaptable and practical, who can operate with minimal supervision and confidently tackle different challenges day-to-day.

This is ideal for someone who enjoys problem-solving, working across varied environments and developing their skills in a broad electrical engineering setting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with the design, layout, installation, and commissioning of control panels and control systems
  • Assemble, install, and maintain electrical systems, panels, and associated equipment
  • Carry out fault finding and troubleshooting on control systems, power supplies and electrical infrastructure
  • Work on mains-powered systems, including distribution boards and final circuits
  • Install and maintain cable containment systems such as tray, conduit and trunking
  • Install and support data networks and associated cabling and equipment
  • Perform testing and commissioning of electrical equipment and infrastructure
  • Respond to electrical breakdowns and emergency repairs
  • Collaborate with engineers, technicians, and contractors on larger-scale projects
  • Maintain safe working areas, identify risks, and ensure materials and tools are available when needed

The ideal candidate

Essential Experience & Skills

  • Electrical apprenticeship or equivalent hands-on training and experience
  • Experience working safely with low voltage (LV) electrical systems
  • Ability to test, fault-find, and work confidently on electrical systems
  • Experience working with control systems, control panels, or similar electrical assemblies
  • Ability to read and work from electrical drawings and schematics
  • Solid understanding of health and safety principles when working with electrical systems
  • Comfortable working in a hands-on, practical environment (including varied physical tasks)
  • Proactive, self-motivated, and able to work with minimal supervision
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Good communication skills and ability to work within a team

Desirable

  • 18th Edition (BS 7671)
  • Inspection and testing (2391)
  • Experience working in complex or non-standard environments
  • Additional certifications such as MEWP, PASMA, PAT, or similar
  • Professional registration or working towards it (e.g. EngTech)
  • Electrical technician roles in engineering or R&D environments
  • Industrial environments with exposure to control systems
