Explore Milton Park programme launches with interactive Maths experience for local students

Business volunteers from Milton Park enjoyed a successful first #ExploreMiltonPark experience with young people at Didcot Girls’ School in March.

Over 280 students from the school questioned volunteers from Oberlanders, Oakford Advisors and Carbon Colour about how they use Maths in their jobs to understand how the lessons they learn in the classroom can lead to exciting careers at Milton Park.

Milton Park appointed Ahead Partnership earlier this year to develop and deliver this new programme of innovative activities to help local young people grow their employability skills and discover careers in science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics (STEAM).

At this fast-paced careers panel activity, the volunteers were able to explain how skills learned from the Maths curriculum are used in their daily lives, including modelling and scaling, working out percentages and measurements.

Leonie Matthews, Programme Manager for #ExploreMiltonPark at Ahead Partnership, said: “It was wonderful to see so many young women become excited about how Maths applies to real world problems and how mastering this subject can lead to a fulfilling career right on their doorstep.

“The business volunteers were wonderful role models and helped the students see a wide range of careers that need successful STEAM skills, making them more relatable and tangible at this important stage in the students’ lives.

“This was just the first activity in this long-term social value programme with a number of local partner schools and we welcome anyone working on the Milton Park site to get involved over the coming months to make a positive impact on more young people in the area and grow the future of the STEAM sector.”

Jeannine Baker-Wilson from Oberlanders volunteered at the Maths careers panel and said: “I really enjoyed having an opportunity to share my career experience with the young women involved and their questions were insightful, interesting and provoked a lot of discussion.

“I’d encourage anyone based at Milton Park to get involved in this education programme as the experiences are rewarding for you and the young people involved. Businesses that are committed to tackling local skills gaps in STEAM and encouraging more people to work in our sector have a golden opportunity to make an important difference through #ExploreMiltonPark.”

If you’d like to take part in #ExploreMiltonPark please contact Leonie Matthews at explore@miltonpark.com for the calendar of events and more information. The next available activity will be held on 10 May 2023. A full briefing pack will be sent out to every participant.
