Our new shared pedestrian and cycleway route phase 1 is now open

Published on: 03/07/2020

You may have noticed that the brand new footpath and cycleway route, running the north-south length at Milton Park, is now open!

This is phase one of our big project which totals 0.62 miles, linking Backhill Tunnel and Kelaart's Field. Oxfordshire County Council will soon be starting work on the section across Kelaart's Field to Milton Road in Sutton Courtenay. A new cycle crossing on Park Drive will follow soon.

It's all part of our 2040 Vision, to help improve foot and cycle connectivity through the Park, while reducing the reliance on car use.

Phase 2 is due to happen in October when a bridge will be craned into place linking the north side to Kelaart's Field and beyond. With Oxfordshire County Council's recent improvements to Peep-o-Day Lane, the cycle route between Milton Park and Abingdon is being greatly improved.

Veronica Reynolds, sustainable transport advisor, Milton Park said: "It's great feeling to see the first phase of this new path open and already in use, just this week!

"We have seen from our data that cycling has never been so popular at the Park. We continue to do everything we can to continue to encourage cycling, scooting and walking into work, both through infrastructure initiatives such as this new route and events such as our popular monthly Bike 2 Work breakfasts.

"Our thanks to Southern Construction and Surfacing, the contractors which have built this during lockdown in a socially distanced way, and to Park-based ASA Landscape Architects, our landscape consultancy along with Nurture, which have ensured the wildflower planting around it will be enjoyed for years to come."
